"Okay, so here's how you enter the data," Liam said, forcing a smile. His replacement, a sharp-eyed woman named Jessica, scribbled notes in a neat pad. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Liam felt a strange, detached calm, as though he was observing his own life from a great distance.

He moved through the motions of his routine with a slow, almost robotic precision. Each task, each keystroke, a step through a familiar, well-worn path. The energy to care was absent. The world seemed to have drained of all color. His enthusiasm had vanished long ago, buried under years of repetition.
