The familiar scent of old books filled Thomas's tiny apartment, a comfort that had begun to feel claustrophobic. He pushed a stack of resumes aside and stared at the email notification on his screen. The subject line: "Regarding your application." He hesitated, dread pooling in his stomach. He didn’t want to look.

He’d always felt a calling to be a librarian, to curate knowledge and share his love of literature. The opening at the local library was his dream job, the only one he'd really wanted in years. He’d studied and prepared, and even now, the thought of someone else holding the position felt like a physical blow.

He took a deep breath, steeling himself. He clicked the email, the words a cold slap to his face. The position had been awarded to another candidate. He slumped back in his chair, the weight of his unfulfilled aspirations pressing down on him. He felt trapped in a life he no longer wanted.
