"So, they chose someone else," Sarah muttered, staring at the empty wine bottle on the kitchen counter. Across the island, Emma, her friend and also a fellow applicant for the journalism position, simply nodded. The news had arrived just hours ago.

Sarah's apartment was usually neat, but now clothes were strewn across the sofa, and a stack of unread books lay on the floor. Her usual routines felt pointless, each task a reminder of the goals she wasn't achieving. She reached for another glass, her hand trembling slightly.

The rejection stung. She'd envisioned herself writing compelling stories, making a difference. Instead, she felt like she was trapped in a holding pattern. The world outside, the city filled with stories she could no longer reach, seemed distant.
