The weight room felt oppressive, the rhythmic clang of the weights a relentless metronome marking the passing of time. Ben sat slumped on a bench, staring at the weight in front of him. He and Ryan had both applied for the personal trainer position at the local gym. Ryan had won the role.

He felt a pressure in his temples, a dull ache that seemed to spread through his entire body. He’d spent years cultivating his physique, believing it was the key to his success. Now, all his efforts felt futile.
