He’d always been a creature of habit. The morning coffee, the evening news, the late-night work calls. Sarah watched Michael’s routine with a detached sort of weariness. Tonight, though, the routine was off. He’d gone outside to take the call – the one with the anonymous number flashing across the screen. Her palms were clammy. The kitchen clock ticked loudly in the sudden silence of the house. She rinsed a dish, the cool water doing nothing to soothe the heat rising in her face. Why couldn't things ever change?
