“Well, this is just great,” I muttered, staring at the message on my phone. The surprise birthday party for my best friend, Sarah, was off. A single line, no explanation. I felt a surge of frustration, followed by a strange, heavy stillness. My hands started to tremble. I ran my fingers through my hair, feeling the strands twist around each other. The apartment felt too small, the walls closing in. I wanted to scream, to break something, to somehow externalize this feeling of being hemmed in. I paced the floor, unable to sit down, unable to do anything.
