The office air conditioning blasted cold air, making David shiver even in his sweater. He re-read the email, the terse notification of a performance review. He knew what was coming. The same platitudes, the same promises of advancement. The new guy, Ben, had already been fast-tracked. He had the latest software, the newest laptop, and the coveted corner office. He’d heard Ben's starting salary was more than David's current one.

He pressed his palms against his eyes, trying to will away the headache that had been constant for weeks. Everything felt like a struggle, an uphill climb with no summit in sight. His enthusiasm had long since withered.
