The relentless tick-tock of the grandfather clock in the hallway echoed in Anya’s ears. She felt pinned, each hour a physical burden. Her life with Ben, once a vibrant landscape, had slowly faded into a monochrome painting. She was watching TV, when Ben came through the door.

“Konnichiwa, Anya!” he greeted, his eyes sparkling with a new intensity. She stared at him, unable to speak, the words lost in her throat. She had been wanting to learn Japanese for years.
