Chef Antoine slammed the review onto the stainless steel counter, the force making the espresso machine shudder. The words, penned with brutal precision, painted his signature dish, the Coq au Vin, as "pedestrian, flavorless, and tragically under-seasoned." He ran a hand through his thinning hair, the familiar ache in his neck intensifying. The same ache he felt every morning, every afternoon, every evening. He’d poured his heart into that dish, just like he had for twenty years. Now, it was just another plate.

He walked to the back, the clamor of the kitchen fading as he went. The walk-in was cold, the air thick with the scent of aging produce. He picked up a perfectly ripe tomato, its skin gleaming red under the harsh fluorescent lights. He pressed his thumb against it, feeling its yielding flesh. It reminded him of the days when cooking had been an adventure, not an obligation.

He wanted to scream. Instead, he just stood there, the tomato still clutched in his hand, feeling the chill seep into his bones.
