"Bland," the review had sneered. Chef Kenji felt the word claw at his throat. He stared out the window, at the rain-slicked streets of the city. He’d moved here chasing a dream, a dream that now seemed further away than ever. He sighed, the sound lost in the rhythmic drumming against the glass.

He ran a hand over the worn wooden counter, the familiar texture a small comfort. He felt as if he was trapped, circling the same ingredients, the same techniques. He'd lost his creativity, become a factory worker of food, not an artist. The vibrant flavors of his grandmother's cooking, the source of his passion, felt like a distant memory.

He turned back to the kitchen, the steam from the simmering sauce a hazy cloud. It was time for service. Again. He lifted a ladle and began to stir, the motion automatic, the spark of joy extinguished.
