Rain lashed against the windows as Amelia stared at the unsigned birthday card. Another year had ticked by, another year where she felt… stagnant. The calligraphy was elegant, a swirling script she didn't recognize. She tossed it onto the overflowing pile of bills and junk mail. The chipped mug in her hand, filled with lukewarm coffee, felt heavy. She’d promised herself she'd start painting again, finish that canvas gathering dust in the corner. But the thought of it seemed to require more energy than she possessed.

She slumped onto the worn couch, the springs groaning in protest. The television blared, a show she barely registered. Her fingers traced the outline of a faded butterfly tattoo on her wrist.
