The phone felt heavy in Sarah's hand as she listened to her mother's words. "The locket, darling. I'm putting it up for auction." The locket, engraved with their family crest, was all she had left of her father. Sarah’s fingers tightened around the phone until her knuckles were white. Her apartment felt small, confining. A tightness in her throat made it difficult to swallow. The city outside, usually a symphony of sounds, was a dull drone. A vast emptiness had spread within her, a barren landscape mirroring the desolate prospect of her mother's decision.
