He walked through the empty rooms, the hollow echo of his footsteps amplifying the silence. The demolition crew had already begun their work, the distant rumble of machinery a constant reminder of the impending destruction. The air was thick with the smell of dust and regret. He was supposed to be far away. He was supposed to be starting over. He could not bring himself to leave, to let go of the last vestige of his past. He felt his legs locked in place, unable to take a single step forward.
