The air crackled with anticipation as David brought up the idea of a pet hamster. His roommate, Mark, was perched on the edge of the sofa, his usual easy smile absent. He felt a strange tension.

David described the hamster's playful antics, its tiny cage, and the low maintenance. Mark listened, but his mind drifted to the bills piling up on the kitchen counter, the looming deadline at work, the weight of responsibility he already carried.
