He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it a mess. The banquet hall loomed, a vast, echoing space filled with the expectant murmurs of relatives and colleagues. Daniel tugged at his tie, the knot suddenly feeling like a noose. His father’s career, a monument of consistent effort and unwavering principle, cast a long shadow. He, on the other hand… He hadn't been able to make any real headway in years. The law firm felt like a maze, each turn leading to a dead end.

He rehearsed the opening line in his head: “Dad, you’ve been an inspiration…” The words felt hollow, like a poorly-played instrument. He wanted to say something real, something that captured the tangled emotions of admiration and envy, of love and something else, something he couldn't name. He swallowed hard.
