The news, delivered with corporate precision, landed on David like a physical blow. His breath hitched as he read the email, the words blurring before his eyes. The sale of the company. It had finally happened.

He looked around his cubicle, at the framed photos, the motivational posters, the small collection of knick-knacks that represented his life here. All of it, now, felt hollow. He'd been here for a long time, and he had watched others come and go, but this felt different.

The thought of change, of the unknown, filled him with a quiet dread. He felt as if his feet were in cement. He would have to deal with it, but he couldn't imagine how.
