Liam sat perfectly still, staring at the email on his screen. The words – “Acquisition Pending” – echoed in his mind. He ran his hand over his face, as if trying to wipe away the words, the reality. He’d built his life around this job, this company.

He felt the muscles in his jaw clench, as if he were trying to contain a scream. His gaze drifted to the window, the world outside a vibrant contrast to the sterile environment of his office. He longed to be out there, to be anywhere but here.

He felt a heavy weight on his shoulders, a feeling of being weighed down, held in place. He wanted to move, to run, to escape. But his legs were leaden.
