The cramped, dimly lit kitchen felt smaller than usual to Ricardo. He stared at the recipe for his grandma's famous lasagna, a dish he’d always failed to master. He wanted to feel the comfort of her recipe, but it was just a reminder of his own inadequacies. He was supposed to text his cousin, venting his feelings. He was about to write, "Can’t start." Instead, his trembling fingers sent the message to the head chef at the upscale restaurant where he worked as a dishwasher.
