Gemotions

The aroma of freshly printed photographs, a scent that once invigorated Eleanor, now felt like a heavy blanket. The darkroom, her sanctuary, was now a cramped space, cluttered with her daughter Lily’s endless stream of developing prints. She used to find joy in the careful manipulation of light and chemical reactions. Now, it was a chore, the hours bleeding into one another.

Eleanor watched, a dull ache in her chest, as Lily meticulously cropped a landscape photo, her brow furrowed in concentration. The girl’s eyes, alight with the same passion Eleanor had once possessed, felt like a judgment. The camera, once an extension of her own gaze, now seemed to mock her from its perch on the shelf.

"More coffee?" Lily asked, her voice bright, barely glancing up. Eleanor simply nodded, her hand tracing the chipped surface of the developing tray. She felt a profound weariness, a longing for something she couldn't name.
