The aroma of freshly brewed coffee did nothing to lift Maya's mood. She sat at her desk, staring at her computer screen, the words blurring before her eyes. The promotion was the only thing she had focused on for the last year.

She felt a hollowness in her chest, a sense of emptiness that she couldn't explain. She opened the email with the interview details, and a sudden wave of nausea washed over her. She pushed the keyboard away, the desk felt like a mountain in front of her.

She closed her eyes, trying to block out the thoughts, the fears, the crushing weight of expectation. She felt she was in a well, the sides smooth and impossible to climb.
