Liam stared at the letter, the paper thin and fragile beneath his fingertips. His father's handwriting, usually bold and confident, was shaky here. The draft resignation letter, dated from a time before Liam was born, described his father's feeling of being trapped. Liam ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture a sign of his unease.

The letter mentioned a company he'd never heard of, a job he'd never known his father held. A job now lost, in memory, forever. He felt a pressure build in his chest, a tightness he’d come to know well. He’d just received his own performance review, the feedback predictable, the future equally so. It was all so stagnant.

He crumpled the letter in his fist, then immediately regretted it, smoothing the paper carefully. This wasn't his father's story, it was his own. He needed to make a change, a big one. It was the only way he could break free.
