The old house felt empty, even though it was filled with boxes. The silence was deafening, punctuated only by the scrape of cardboard against the floorboards. Across the room, Olivia was humming, packing her things. She was ready to move to Chicago.

I watched her through the doorway, a knot forming in my gut. I hated the thought of her leaving.
