The bus station buzzed with a frenetic energy that only served to intensify the stillness within Amelia. She clutched a lukewarm coffee, her fingers numb. Across the crowded waiting area, Ethan was saying goodbye, his face animated as he spoke to their shared friends. He was off to California, to take on the world.

She watched him, the crowd a blur around her.

She shifted, the plastic cup digging into her palm. She felt like everything she used to enjoy, all the things that made her laugh, had been swallowed by a great, yawning nothingness. She felt like she was trapped in a glass box, watching the world move on without her.
