The drive was long, the kind of drive that left Emily weary. She’d returned home out of a sense of obligation. The house seemed smaller, the gardens overgrown, as if time itself had grown lax.

Her gaze drifted to the edge of the lawn, the area where the cherry tree she’d planted with her grandmother once stood. Now, there was just a void. A shudder ran through her.

The familiar world suddenly felt foreign. She felt anchored, as if wading through molasses. Each step forward felt like an monumental feat. She wanted something different, but she had no idea how to get it.
