Eliza stared at the antique music box, a gift from her recently deceased grandmother. It was ornate, inlaid with mother-of-pearl, and wound with a key that seemed far too small for such a weighty object. Inside, a tiny porcelain ballerina pirouetted to a tinny rendition of "Für Elise." Her brother, Leo, received their grandmother's sprawling beachfront property. He was already making plans to rent it out. She, on the other hand, felt the weight of the box on her lap, a relic she wasn’t sure how to handle.

Eliza felt a knot tighten in her stomach. The past few months, everything had felt a little off-kilter, like she was always waiting for something to shift.
