He stared at the spreadsheet, the figures swimming before his eyes. The numbers, cold and stark, represented a life he’d never seen. A life separate from the one he’d been living with her. He felt a profound sense of paralysis. He pushed his chair back from the desk, the cheap plastic creaking in protest. Outside, the city roared, but within the confines of their apartment, silence pressed down on him, heavy and suffocating. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture conveying a weariness that went bone deep. He felt like a ship without sails, adrift.
