The shouting from the apartment above echoed in Leo’s head. His landlord’s latest complaint letter rested on the kitchen counter, accusing him of creating noise. His pulse quickened. He hated confrontations.

He closed his eyes, his fists clenching. He felt a tremor run through him, a mixture of fear and resentment. He wanted to shout back, to tell them to leave him alone, but the words would not come.

He looked around his apartment, a space he’d hoped would be his sanctuary. It was now a source of anxiety. He picked up his phone, but couldn't bring himself to make the call he needed to make.
