The sunlight felt harsh against Amelia's skin as she stood on the porch, staring at the border between their properties. The looming pine, a shared sentinel for decades, had always felt safe. Now, Mr. Davies wanted to fell it. The air hung thick with the scent of pine needles, a smell she used to find comforting. Her hands, usually so busy, were clasped tightly in front of her.
