The invitation wafted over the fence like a dandelion seed, catching Amelia completely off guard. Mrs. Gable, normally a silent presence, was suddenly beaming, her hands clasped in front of her. "Just a little plot, you know? For vegetables. Your side gets the morning sun, it's perfect!" Amelia felt her jaw clench, her mind a slow-moving, thick syrup. It was as though the words were caught in her throat. She found herself nodding, her gaze fixed on the meticulously manicured lawn, the very thing she took little pleasure in maintaining.

The next day, she found herself staring out the kitchen window, watching Mrs. Gable’s vibrant green and brown rectangles emerge from the lawn. Each spadeful of earth felt like a silent criticism, a pointed reminder. The sun beat down, turning the air thick and heavy, mimicking the inertia that had become her constant companion. She retreated inside, the silence of the house pressing down.
