The neighbor's request came as a surprise, delivered with a basket of fresh peaches. "Just a small area, maybe? We’re thinking of a vegetable patch. The light is lovely on your side." Clara felt her breath catch. The request wasn't the issue. It was the weight, the inescapable pressure that had settled over her, the inertia that held her in place. She mumbled an assent, already picturing the intrusion.

The next day, she sat by the window, watching the neighbor’s activity, and felt a surge of resentment. She felt it constricting her, and the tightness in her shoulders wouldn't ease.
