The first thought that flashed through Clara's mind when she read the notice was not of money or inconvenience. It was of the years, the relentless accumulation of them, and of how they seemed to be melting into one another. She sighed, her breath misting in the cool air of her apartment. She turned to her window, the city lights blurring outside. The same view every night. The same commute every morning. The same routine every single day. She found her eyes drifting down to the chipped paint on the windowsill. Her fingers traced the rough texture of the wood. The paint had been chipping for years and she had never gotten around to repairing it.

She felt an overwhelming sense of immobility, a sense of being anchored to a spot, unable to break the orbit that held her. The walls of her apartment seemed to close in, compressing her space and spirit.
