The sunlight seemed to mock Elena as it streamed through the kitchen window. Her grandmother, Maria, had just announced her intention to convert to Judaism. The news had left Elena feeling a profound sense of… disquiet. She’d retreated to the kitchen, the steam from the boiling water for pasta filling the room.

The water bubbled, a monotonous sound. She gripped the cold marble countertop, a tremor running through her. She envisioned her grandmother, a woman whose entire life had been defined by Catholicism, embracing this new faith.

She wondered how she could possibly feel so... bothered. It was her grandmother's decision, after all. But the thought of her grandmother, the woman who had always been her anchor, changing so fundamentally, made her want to scream.
