The first nail gun burst echoed through the thin walls, vibrating right into Eleanor's chest. She clenched her jaw, the sound a physical blow. Pulling the covers tighter, she burrowed deeper into the darkness. Sunlight streamed in, mocking the gloom she cultivated. She was already late for her own appointment, a meeting she dreaded. She just wanted the day to disappear.

The incessant hammering intensified, driving her to the edge. Grabbing her phone, she canceled her appointment. Then she slammed it back on the nightstand, the action mirroring the frustration welling inside her. Outside, the world was alive, building, creating. She was not.
