The airport felt like a purgatory. Arthur's shoulders were slumped, his posture reflecting the crushing weight of disappointment. He hadn't bothered to eat his pre-flight meal; the food felt like a lump in his stomach. His son's graduation was the most important event of the year, a milestone he'd promised himself he wouldn't miss. He'd envisioned himself there, beaming with pride, clapping loudly. Now, his mind was stuck in a loop of worry.

He pushed his phone away, unable to bring himself to call his son. The thought of hearing his son's excitement, followed by the news of his impending absence, was too much. The harsh fluorescent lights overhead seemed to amplify his misery.
