Liam kicked at a loose pebble on the cobblestone path leading to the observatory. The familiar scent of ozone, usually invigorating, now felt stale. He’d gone looking for Dr. Anya Sharma, ready to present his latest research on quasars, but found only a terse note. A quick congratulations for his upcoming publication, and a goodbye. He had poured his heart and soul into this project, hoping for her approval.

His shoulders slumped as he reread the words. He found himself picking at the frayed edge of the note, destroying it piece by piece. The vastness of the night sky, usually a source of wonder, now felt oppressive, reflecting the emptiness he felt. He’d expected at least a phone call, a dinner, something more than a brief note.
