The air in the library felt thick, heavy with the scent of old paper and dust. I leaned against a bookshelf, my back pressed to the worn wood. My stomach churned. The news – that Eleanor, the celebrated author who had supposedly written a string of bestsellers, was actually working in the library itself – was a blow.

I had cherished her books, the way her words transported me to other worlds. I'd idolized her, believed in her talent and her success. Now, the shelves, the books, the very atmosphere felt tainted, a mockery of the truth.

I pulled out a novel, a book of poetry. The pages felt brittle, lifeless in my hands. I felt a profound sense of disillusionment, a weariness that settled deep within my bones. I closed the book, its cover facing out, a sudden and inexplicable sense of melancholy enveloping me.
