The crisp autumn air held no charm for Henry. He stood on the porch, watching the leaves swirl in the wind, a reflection of the turmoil within him. Inside, Maya was supposedly talking to her sister, but the hushed tones and the averted eyes told a different story.

He remembered seeing a new number on the bill. The phone call seemed to last an hour.

His hands clenched. His jaw tightened. He thought of confronting her, of demanding answers, but the words caught in his throat.

He turned and walked back inside, a hollow ache settling in his chest.
