The world was grey. The absence of the car, which should have been humming in the driveway, felt like a physical wound. Sarah surveyed the empty space, her fingers tracing the outline where the tires had been. A chill ran through her.

She barely registered the insistent thrum of the refrigerator. The tow truck company’s name was printed on the notice. She wanted to hurl the paper into the street. But instead, she slowly folded it and placed it in her pocket.

The day stretched before her, a vast expanse of unwelcome obligations. She trudged back inside, the joy and enthusiasm that usually accompanied her morning routine had completely vanished.
