He slammed the door of his new office a little harder than necessary. David stared out the window, watching the city traffic crawl below. A dull ache throbbed in his temples. He’d requested the move to engineering, a chance to finally apply his theoretical knowledge. Instead, he got shuffled to the customer complaints department.

He slumped in his chair, the leather squeaking in protest. The stapler on his desk seemed to glare at him. He picked it up, flipped it over, and examined it with an intensity usually reserved for the most complex blueprints. The silence, broken only by the distant clatter of keyboards, amplified the emptiness in his chest.
