Rain lashed against the window, mirroring the tempest brewing inside her. The florist had called, a cheerful voice on the other end of the line, explaining the cancellation. A wave of exhaustion washed over her. She sank onto the couch, letting her shoulders slump.

Her fingers traced the patterns on the worn upholstery. The house felt too big, too empty. She’d spent weeks planning, coordinating, pouring her heart into every detail. Now, it was all for nothing. The vibrant colors of the birthday decorations she'd bought earlier that day, sat in a bag on the floor, mocking her.

Her appetite had disappeared entirely. She couldn’t bring herself to eat the birthday cake she’d ordered, sitting in the fridge. She picked at a single piece of carrot stick, feeling a knot tighten in her stomach. All she wanted was to be left alone.
