He barely greeted anyone this morning. He walked straight past the water cooler where his colleagues were huddled, chatting and laughing. He kept his headphones on, the music doing little to soothe his inner turmoil. He was a tightly wound spring.

The email from HR had finally arrived, confirming what he already knew. He hadn’t even bothered to open it. It was all so predictable. He knew it was time to find another job.

His fingers hovered over the keyboard, but he couldn’t bring himself to start his work. He could only stare at the blank document, feeling his chest constrict with a familiar ache. He felt like he was being mocked.
