The low hum of the refrigerator filled the kitchen. Maya stared out the window, the city lights blurred by the rain. She chewed on her lip, a habit she'd developed recently. Everything felt...wrong. David had been distant lately, spending hours in his study. The scent of coffee, stronger than usual, drifted through the air.

David emerged, carrying two mugs. "Buenos días, mi vida," he said, handing her one. The words were unfamiliar, a clumsy imitation. She stared into the steaming liquid, the rich aroma doing nothing to soothe her unease.
