The world felt muted. Gray. Even the coffee tasted like ash. He kicked a small pebble as he walked towards the mailbox, feeling the familiar weight of disappointment settle in his chest. A vibrant card, tucked among the bills, felt out of place. It depicted a whimsical garden scene, bursting with color. "Wishing you a wonderful day!" it proclaimed. No name. He barely glanced at it, but the picture, the bright green, the cheerful font… he jammed it in his pocket, already anticipating the inevitable loneliness of the evening.
