The house stood silent, a sentinel of forgotten stories. David slammed the car door shut, the sound echoing in the empty street. He felt a tightening in his chest, a sensation he couldn't shake. His sister, Sarah, walked silently beside him, her face unreadable.

He pushed open the front door, the hinges protesting with a rusty screech. The air inside was heavy with the scent of dust and something else, something indefinable, that evoked a sharp sting of loss. He walked through the rooms, his movements slow and deliberate.

Sarah started talking about the will, the paperwork, the logistics. He barely heard her. He just wanted to be left alone to wrestle with the emotions that threatened to overwhelm him. He turned and quietly left the house.
