The chipped mug warmed Amelia's hands, but the heat didn't touch the chill in her chest. She stared out the window at the rain-streaked glass, each drop mirroring the dampness that seemed to have settled over her entire being. The bakery across the street, “Cinnamon Dreams,” was buzzing. Laughter and the clatter of plates drifted on the breeze. That infernal, "Sunrise Swirl" was the reason for all the racket, she knew. A recipe she'd perfected, meticulously, over years. A recipe now lauded under someone else's name.

Her jaw clenched. The memory of the bake-off, the judges' dismissive glances at her humble stall… it was a fresh wound. She took a slow sip of the coffee, its bitterness doing nothing to alleviate the internal acrimony.

Amelia sighed, a breath that felt heavy and thick. She could practically taste the cinnamon, the secret ingredient, the one thing she knew made it different from everything else. Someone was enjoying the rewards of her innovation.
