He slammed the laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the otherwise quiet apartment. The DNA results had confirmed his deepest, unspoken fear. He pushed away from the desk, the chair screeching on the hardwood floor. A knot tightened in his stomach. He felt the need to destroy something, anything. He stalked over to the window, the city lights a distant, indifferent glitter.

He picked up a heavy ceramic vase from the windowsill, examining it as if for the first time. The smooth, cool surface was a stark contrast to the boiling chaos within him. He hurled it against the wall, the shattering sound a brief moment of satisfaction before a wave of emptiness crashed over him. He sank to the floor, surrounded by shards of the past.

“Goddamn it,” he whispered, the words barely audible above the ringing in his ears. He curled into himself, a small, insignificant speck in the vast expanse of his suddenly meaningless existence.
