"Fine," Sarah said to herself, her voice barely audible. She crumpled the rejection letter, the paper crackling in her tight grip. She then threw it in the trash. The publisher had clearly no taste.

She was meant to be at a writing workshop, but the thought of facing other hopefuls, of offering a smile and pretending to be optimistic, was unbearable. She had canceled.

She stood in front of the mirror, studying her reflection. Her eyes, usually bright with creative spark, were now dull and lifeless. Her shoulders slumped. She wanted to disappear.
