Gemotions

Sarah slammed the door to her apartment a little harder than necessary, the sound echoing in the empty space. She tossed her briefcase onto the sofa, the leather thudding softly against the cushions. She peeled off her heels, the familiar ache in her feet a small comfort compared to the dull ache in her soul.

Her phone buzzed. A congratulatory text from Michael, the man who had been chosen. “So thrilled for you, buddy!” it read. She ignored it, letting it sit there in her inbox. She went into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of wine, the first sip doing nothing to soothe the tightness in her throat.

She slumped against the counter, staring out the window at the city lights. They seemed to mock her, bright and glittering while she felt…deflated. Everything felt flat, lacking color. She took another long swallow of wine, wishing she could simply erase the day from her memory.
