The coffee shop buzzed with the usual Saturday morning crowd, but the cheerful ambience felt hostile. James sat across from his friend, who was excitedly describing his new life across the country. He pushed the foam of his latte around with a spoon, not tasting it.

He listened to the excitement in his friend's voice, the stories of new beginnings, the promise of adventure, and something within him twisted. He nodded, offering the occasional forced laugh, but his heart felt heavy. The coffee tasted bitter.

He excused himself to go to the bathroom. He leaned over the sink, staring at his reflection, a stranger in a familiar face. He splashed water on his face, the coldness offering a momentary relief, but the heavy feeling remained.
