The lawyer’s words, sweet and saccharine, still rang in his ears. “Shared equally.” Finn couldn't bring himself to look at his sister, Maya. He kept his gaze fixed on the peeling wallpaper.

He’d found a handwritten will, tucked inside a battered old book, confirming their inheritance. He read it, word by word, the details blurring. His share? A small, unremarkable plot of land, barren and forgotten.

Maya, however, was beaming. She held up a key, a genuine smile on her face. A key to their grandmother’s old apartment in the city. A place, Finn knew, brimming with memories and possibilities. He felt a coldness creep into his limbs, as if the air had suddenly dropped in temperature.
